Tilak Varma strengthened his case for a spot in India’s ODI team with a solid 94-run knock, but Australia A bounced back to win the rain-shortened second List A match by nine wickets on Friday.

Coming off his impressive performance in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, Tilak once again showed his ability in the one-day format, helping India A post a total of 246, a modest score on the board.

What happened in the match?

After a rain delay of nearly three hours, Australia A were given a revised target of 160 runs in 25 overs, as per the Duckworth-Lewis method. Before the rain interruption, the Australian side had already reached 48 without loss in just 5.5 overs.

Post the break, batting became easier, and McKenzie Harvey (70* off 49 balls) along with Cooper Connolly (50 off 31) comfortably guided the team to victory, even after Jake Fraser-McGurk’s quickfire 36 off 20 balls gave them a flying start. The Aussies chased down the total in only 16.4 overs.

With the series now level at 1-1, the final game will take place on Sunday.

How was the chase?

During the chase, Indian bowlers were punished heavily, conceding 22 boundaries and six sixes, with Arshdeep Singh giving away 44 runs in his four overs.

The selectors had included in-form players Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma in the India A squad, as they are being considered for long-term roles at the top and in the middle order. However, Abhishek was dismissed for a duck on the first ball he faced, caught off Jack Edwards’ bowling.

How did Tilak Varma perform in the match?

Tilak, on the other hand, showed great determination, scoring 94 from 122 deliveries, which included five fours and four sixes. Captain Shreyas Iyer fell early for just eight runs, leaving India A struggling at 17 for 3.

Tilak then teamed up with young talent Riyan Parag (58 off 54) to add 101 runs for the fourth wicket and steady the innings. Later, Tilak formed a 34-run partnership with Ravi Bishnoi for the ninth wicket, followed by a 28-run stand with Arshdeep for the final wicket.

Tilak was the last batter out, falling just six runs short of a well-earned century. For Australia A, Jack Edwards was the standout bowler, finishing with four wickets.
